Rugby league first aid and medical qualifications

Rugby league has its own Rugby Football League medical requirements. Start with the role and competition, then distinguish first aid education from intermediate and advanced field-of-play medical courses.

Grassroots first aid is a separate role

Check the current RFL requirements for the team, competition and participant age group. Do not assume workplace first aid or a rugby union award automatically meets every rugby league requirement. Ask the governing body about the exact certificate and any additional learning.

The RFL also provides concussion education for first aiders trained by other providers. Completing an information module is not a replacement for the required practical first aid award or professional registration.

i-IMMOFP and IMMOFP: what changes?

The RFL describes i-IMMOFP as an intermediate route for physiotherapists, sports therapists and rehabilitators. Its published course covers much of IMMOFP without the drug-giving element and is certified for three years. IMMOFP has separate professional entry requirements and a recurring refresher schedule.

Do not shorten an intermediate certificate to “IMMOFP” in a role description. Ask which award the person holds and which the competition requires. Course completion does not independently authorise medicines use or extend a professional’s scope of practice.

Intermediate medical education · i-IMMOFP

The RFL lists intermediate education separately from its advanced IMMOFP course. Review the current course entry requirements and role requirements with the RFL; do not treat the abbreviation “IMMOFP” as covering both courses.

Advanced medical education · IMMOFP

IMMOFP is the RFL’s advanced field-of-play medical course. Its published information sets different entry requirements for doctors, physiotherapists, paramedics, sports therapists and sport rehabilitators.

For first-time IMMOFP applicants, the RFL lists ITMMiF Level 4 or PHICIS Level 2 as prerequisites for sports therapists and sport rehabilitators. That prerequisite is not the same as holding IMMOFP, and it does not replace the RFL’s other professional and insurance requirements.

Refresher history matters

The RFL publishes a repeating IMMOFP cycle: a two-day course in year one, one-day refreshers in years two and three, then the two-day course again in year four. Check the latest required attendance as well as the original certificate. The intermediate course’s three-year certification should not be substituted for this advanced-course refresher record.

The RFL page also displays 2025 course dates. Use it to understand the published pathway, then ask the RFL for current course dates and any updated requirements before planning attendance.

Questions to resolve before rugby league matchday

Build the enquiry around the rugby league competition and role. A note saying “rugby qualified” does not identify the code, the certificate or whether required refreshers are current. Record outstanding questions before discussing attendance.

  • Which competition rules and age group apply, and who can confirm the required role?
  • Is the named award i-IMMOFP, IMMOFP or a different required first aid qualification?
  • Does the available evidence show the relevant certificate and renewal history for the fixture date?
  • What period, teams and pitches need cover, and what equipment and access arrangements are agreed?

How does World Rugby’s mapping relate to league?

World Rugby includes IMMOFP in its advanced rugby medical education mapping. That comparison describes education; it does not remove rugby league’s own role, entry or reaccreditation requirements. The rugby union guide explains the separate FAIR, ICIR and AICIR levels.

Check the person, the certificate and the fixture

Ask for the full certificate title, issuing body, practical assessment, completion date and expiry or refresher history. Then check the relevant professional registration or membership, insurance, experience and the current rules for the exact sport, competition and role.

A certificate is not a professional registration, and submitting a certificate never approves someone for work. PitchMedic reviews the supporting evidence separately. Standalone first-aider bookings are not currently offered in the beta. We do not provide these courses or award the certificates.
